Jericoacoara

Well, we had a very long journey from Ubajara to where we are now! In Brazil there are no trains for passengers, only for cargo. So it is very popular here to travel by bus. Our journey took 24 hours! We had to do lots of waiting! We were stuck at a cafe by the side of the road for 6 hours! We played card games and drew pictures to pass the time. Have you ever had to wait for a long time like this? What did you do to pass the time?

We arrived in Jericoacoara 4 days ago, it is an isolated beach, which you cannot get to by road. You have to take a dune buggy across miles of sand dunes. Our journey was beautiful.

In Jericoacoara, Capoeira is very popular. I talked about this sport with some of you before I left. Miss Bevan and I took a capoeira lesson on the beach... we still need a lot of practice!

We also watch a Capoeira "roda" (circle), where the players performed their fighting dance. The "batteria" (band) played music using a drum and an instrument called a berimbau, and in pairs the players came up to perform.

It was great to watch! The man playing on the left was our Capoeira teacher.

  1. Hi,

We hope you are having a nice time in sunny Brazil - it is freezing here! We have been reading your blog and researching Brazil in our Geography lessons. Mrs Weber has never heard of Capoeira, can you explain this sport. Tom Sperring wants to know if you can give us lessons when you get back! Sisi asked if you have any pictures of the ride in the dune buggy -we would all like to try that!

Keep enjoying your time in Brazil (try not to get sunburnt or bitten by spiders!) See you in March,

  2. Hi Stapleton class!

It is lovely to hear from you! I can´t wait to hear what you have found out about Brazil!

Mrs Weber, capoeira is a martial art which is popular all over Brazil. It is especially popular in the North, where I am now. It is a non contact martial art and it looks a little bit like a play fight to music. I made a video of the Capoeira performance that I watched and I will upload it onto the blog as soon as I can. There is an explanation of Capoeira in the "Sport in Brazil" section of the blog for more info.

Tom, I will certainly do my best to teach you all what I have learned! However, I am no expert! The capoeiristas we were watching have been training for up to 20 years and can do some amazing backflips and cartwheels!! Unfortunately I am not at this standard yet!

Sisi, I do have pictures of the dune buggy ride and will upload those asap!

How is the weather there now? Is it still snowing? I hope you enjoyed building snowmen and having snowball fights!

I hope you are all working hard.

    Speak soon
    Miss Goldsmith
