Carnival in Olinda

Carnival finally began on the 12th February. The blocos, which had been practising the day before, took to the streets. they were followed by thousands of people who danced and sang behind them. Some were made up of drummers, and some used brass instruments such as trumpets.

Music:
The most popular kinds of music were "frevo" and "maracatu".

Frevo is very fast and the dancers use coloured umbrellas, which they swing around their heads or to pass under thier legs. It looks very difficult! (watch a video)

Maracatu is a kind of music involving drums, it has a very loud beat. Have you ever played the drums? Do you know any other kinds of music which uses drums? Which country does it come from?

Carnival is a time of happiness, and the crowd were in very good spirits.

The carnival continued for 5 days. Each day there were thousands of people in the streets dancing and singing. Often they carried water pistols and joked around, squirting one another. Lots of the blocos were joined by "bonecas", giant puppets operated by one man underneath.

Fancy dress day:
On Sunday there was a fancy dress theme: Superheroes.

People dressed as superman, spiderman and other famous characters. Some made up their own characters!

Have you ever dressed up like this? Did you enjoy it?

There are two other very famous carnivals in Brazil: In Rio and in Salvador. Find out about them on the Brazilian music page
